holiday cards from minted

Since I don't have your address, here's your holiday card from me:

The Stallion and I hope you have a merry holiday season and a bright new year.  Thank you for reading, emailing, tweeting, facebooking, commenting, and supporting us day-in and day-out.  We love you.

So, have you ordered holiday cards yet?  I'm pretty darn excited about it because this is our first one.

If you haven't, I must share with you my absolute favorite place to order any sort of invitation, personalized stationary, customized card -

minted.com

I'll tell you my favorite things about them:
  1. They're fast.
  2. They have impeccable customer service.
  3. You can customize any design online, before ordering, to see what it will look like.
  4. They provide designers with a platform to jumpstart a business.
  5. You can customize beyond your wildest dreams.  We sent them a color number for our wedding invitations and they took the design we liked and totally customized it to our wedding palette.
They're rockstars.

And, as one of my friends, you can get $25 off your order.

And, as one of your friends, it'll give me $25 back if you order something.  Guess I'll have to use that for birth announcements.

KIDDING.

love ya - happy holidays!

the stallion in all his glory.

This is too funny not to share.  Halloween costume, maybe?

I found this image originally on Pinterest (shocker) and thought it was just begging for a photoshop job.

That's right, it's not really him.  Sorry to disappoint.

Have a great weekend!

Peanut Butter Pie + A Renewed Zest for Life

Last Friday, the seemingly endless food blog community collectively made Jennifer Perillo's recipe for peanut butter pie.  Nobody told us to do it.  Well, Jennifer suggested it, but we all acted of our own accord.  A few days after her husband, Mikey, passed unexpectedly, Jennie told us what we could do to help her.  Make Mikey's favorite pie in honor and remembrance of him.

So, as she and her nearest and dearest honored and remembered Mikey during his memorial service, we, her 'internet-friends' began to fill our kitchens and the world wide web with thousands of Mikey's favorite peanut butter pies.

Summer Dinner Party Menu

This menu was created by The Stallion.  Now, I realize that steak, potatoes, and a vegetable are not a revolutionary combination, but he pulled out a few tricks to make this meal much more than ordinary.

But first, let's talk about why The Stallion encroached on my territory.

I was anxious and excited to get back in the kitchen after a long two weeks away, particularly during a time when I had to eat overcooked, unhealthful food in order to spare my insides (since when do I have a weak stomach???).  It was a crying shame that I had to give up all the fresh, ripe, amazing mangoes while in the Dominican.

When we arrived home, we were greeted by a neat pile of mail on our table, along with a card and a gorgeous vase of sunflowers, thanks to our lovely neighbors.  Hosting a thank you dinner for them was the perfect excuse to dive back in headfirst.

But then...then we had friends over to look through wedding and honeymoon pictures.  And we drank copious amounts of wine and Prosecco.  And the next morning when it was time to set the menu and head off to the supermarket, ck was in no shape to look or think about food.  So, The Stallion had to step in and take control.

Here's his (our!) summer dinner party menu:

Champagne Topper Figures

Before I get into a lengthy story about what you see here, I'd just like to state, for the record, that The Stallion and I were back to our usual antics last night.  We sat on the couch.  We had a miscommunication that resulted in The Stallion making dinner for only himself and me being crabby and whiny the rest of the night.  As if I really wasn't going to eat anything.  Also, for the record, I never stated that I did  not want dinner.  That's what he heard.  But he wasn't listening.

My point is not that I was right and he was wrong (although I do believe I have made that point - on accident).  My point is that I want to be sure none of you think I'm so young and naive to think that our relationship is all rainbows and bunnies.  Yes, we did have a great time the night before; yes, we love each other very much; yes, we are soul mates and will never part; no, we are not always perfect.

Now that that's all cleared up, let's talk about champagne people!

The Stallion makes figures out of wire champagne toppers.  The one you see pictured above was made from the bottle of champagne we had at dinner after just getting engaged.  (See, love, I'm giving you some redemption here!)

Spontaneity... and a Jazz Club Reco

A little over 3 years ago, The Stallion and I unknowingly wound up on our first date.

'How does that happen?', you might ask.  Well, this is how:  we used to work together and we went out with a group of colleagues after work on a Friday night.  As they dwindled, we were (happily) left to our lonesome.  The Stallion suggested that we finish the night at Jardine's Restaurant and Jazz Club.

I had never been.  But, boy, do I love that place now.  It's great live music in a dark, intimate setting.  I'll keep it high-level - since my mother and grandmother are likely reading this - but we could not keep our hands off of each other.  It was a truly magical night.

You Know You're a Cook-aholic When...

... you want to throw a SuperBowl party just to try out fun appetizer recipes and feed a bunch of hungry people.

Also, call for recipe: I have never made that cheesy potato casserole thingy with the corn flakes on top. Never in my life. I have no idea what's in it, besides the fact that every ingredient must be sinful. Please send it my way if you have a good one. Maybe I can adjust the amounts and sub ingredients to achieve a good balance of health and taste???

Why am I thinking about this? Well, today is the Stallion's birthday. For his birthday dinner I'm making this:

Diver sea scallops with a caviar sauce over potato pancakes. The Stallion loves sea scallops. (Side note: I got my scallops from McGonigle's this time, and OMW they are 3x the size of the ones in this pic and half the price of Cosentino's. Maybe I'll start making them more often!) The reason I bring up cheesy potato casserole is because the Stallion also loves that, and I will likely never make it unless there is an occasion. An occasion that causes it to leave my house to be eaten. But I could have made a mini casserole for his birthday instead. He probably would have loved that as his cake more than these:

His 'birthday cake' this year is slider cupcakes. I LOVE THEM! They'd be great for a kids' birthday. ...Or The Stallion's birthday. I sent them to work with The Stallion today, too. Just like a little kid. They're SO easy. I bet you could figure out how to make them just from the picture. Anyway, point is - I'll make scallops throughout the year; not as often as The Stallion would like, but I'd still make them. Cheesy potato casserole? That falls under the baking mantra, which I suppose I should now label the Sinful Comfort Food Mantra (make it and take it; make it and TAKE IT AWAY).

Regardless, The Stallion would be happy with whatever I made him. I'm sure. I jokingly told him last night that the broccoli was going to turn any minute, so I should probably make that for dinner tonight instead of asparagus. He said okay. He hates broccoli. Unless it is cooked into oblivion and drenched in cheese. I love broccoli. I love broccoli in it's natural state, just barely steamed. He probably said okay because this is what I got him for this birthday:

The 'most awesome grill in the world'. Half charcoal, half propane. A bit more stallion-like than the slider cupcakes, eh?

Happy Birthday, Love!

Early Christmas

So, I didn't post anything yesterday. I have so much to write about lately: an outing to R Bar, a subsequent visit to Winstead's the next day, recipes for butternut squash with rosemary, pork roast, award-winning chili, and award-winning chocolate chip cookies. And I should totally do my pumpkin pie this week since it's the holidays. Oh my goodness, and a post about my brother, who is FINISHED WITH HIGH SCHOOL and our celebratory dinner at Friends and dessert at McCormick & Schmicks where I exposed my family to the best dessert on the planet. They don't put it on the menu. It's so good it proves the effectiveness of word-of-mouth. And the waitress knew exactly what we were after the second we sat down.

I'm digressing. Way digressing. This post has a point. A very concise, poignant, crazy good point.

But that will come at the end. Right now it's story time. And this is not the full story. The Italian Stallion knows it. But full disclosure will come in due time.

The Stallion and I decided to limit ourselves on Christmas presents this year for each other - we do so much for each other throughout the year, we should concentrate our efforts on others. So we decided to do stocking stuffers. Better-than-your-average stocking stuffers. But not extravagant stocking stuffers. You know - not socks and pens, but not iPods. We limited ourselves to $100. I went over a little. I think the Stallion did, too.

The thing with presents and me is, if I come up with a great gift all on my own (which only one of my gifts this year the Stallion requested. ahem, I'm awesome), then I have an extremely hard time not a) giving it immediately or b) hinting at it because I just can't stand it anymore.

It was for this reason that we decided to open one present early this year. It was going to be last night. But I whined like a petulant child and we decided late Monday afternoon to open them that night! (I WIN)

I had to give the Stallion a headstart on the way home because he didn't wrap his early gift that day like I had. So, I get home and there mine is, right on top of his. It was the size and shape of a DVD or a thin book. Please keep in mind that the Stallion had been talking over the last few days about how excited he was to give me this early gift. I was not excited at the prospect of a book. I mean, I love reading, but come on!

So, I was scared. Very scared. Meanwhile, the Stallion had already opened his gift and tossed it aside (I was fighting a losing battle as you will soon find out) and was concentrating on me. Oh, the pressure. How am I going to shield my disappointment and get excited about whatever this is???

I opened it. It was this:
It's metal. It looks like a refrigerator. Cool...

So, I opened it. It was harmless! There were words I had to read, so that was good. I had some time to react appropriately. The note read this:
Ok, ok, so we're going to do a little scavenger hunt, eh? This first one is totally on Buddha. We have a 3 ft. tall wooden Buddha sculpture. The Stallion carved it. It was one of his first. He used walnut. He learned that walnut is an extremely hard wood. The hard way.

Under Buddha, I found this:
The basil plant! No? Ok, too obvious. Hmmmmm. The lettuce in the fridge? Must be - those lettuce heads are still alive and growing. Yep! Got it:Now, this one tripped me up a bit. (More about the chest in the full disclosure) I opened the chest. Nothing. There was a plastic storage container. Could it be that? No. Hmmm... lift the chest with all your might.... there it was, under the entire chest. Which the Stallion had stacked with his dumbbells, no less. My next clue:
Easy peasy. I have books all over my nightstand. Gotta be in there. Sure is:
Back downstairs we go. The Stallion was hanging out on the floor with the pups. 'Baby, there's no fire!' Wait, the Stallion isn't just hanging out he's on ONE KNEE. And all of a sudden there was a ring box (where on Earth did that come from?). And then I heard this:

'carlyklock, will you marry me?'

Yes, I'm pretty sure that he said carlyklock. Oh my, I've never seen the Stallion so nervous (sorry, love). He could barely get it out. Suddenly I felt numb. My surroundings were now unfamiliar. Surely this isn't real. But before all of that started taking over,

I said YES!

It was a no-brainer. The Stallion and I are soul mates. We both know it. We've both known it for a long time. Since we first met, actually. And Monday night was the first time the Stallion actually admitted it. It was the sweetest thing I've ever heard. Almost.

So, I'm going to be MRS. STALLION! haha.

Remember that outing to R Bar I told you that I need to post? That was the day the Stallion bought the ring. It was also the night that I happened to snag a nail and rip half of it off. It hurt so bad. How lucky for me it was my ring finger on my left hand. It's so far down beyond the quick that not even a manicure could help. And they wouldn't even be able to attach acrylics. So now I have to share a picture of my pudgy hand with a nasty nail. But none of you noticed that, did you? You were too drawn in by my pretty, shiny, sparkly, ring. Right?

After I said yes, we went to dinner at Cafe Provence. It's a French restaurant in the Village, about 94.67 seconds from our house. There was champagne on the table waiting for us. You know how the Stallion makes people out of wire champagne toppers? Well, this time he made a person (me) saying yes. I will treasure it forever.

We got home and The Stallion said, 'is it bad that this ring box reminds me of a casket?'

i heart the Italian Stallion

Can I please just profess my love for the Italian Stallion briefly? Yes? Ok. Great!

Did any of you happen to notice the transformation my blog underwent overnight? The Stallion and I stayed up very late finishing it up. And I can't stop looking at it today! I mean, really. I reopen it every 96 seconds.

Isn't it gorgeous?

Thank you so much, love!

Why do I post pictures of the Stallion making weird faces in order to show that I appreciate him?

Because they're the ones that capture his essence. His take on life. One of the main reasons I love him so much.

And these pictures with our adorable niece and nephew are almost too much for me to bear (see post 'Sugar Plums' from earlier today).

Ugly sweater party last winter. For some reason I am not amused.

Now this one's not a silly one. It just showcases the Stallion's... stallion-ness. Oh my.

Oh, what a thrill you are, my love.

(for those of you who don't get it - the stallion's doing part of the dance to thriller. the song. by michael jackson. hence the usage of thrill. just making sure)
